When I'm with my students, I always ask them "What are the signs telling you?" The Speed Limit signs, Stop signs, Road Curves ahead signs, Construction signs, etc.
This is a helpful question to see where their eyes are looking and what they are processing.
Now, when I see them struggle to read the sign that is 50 feet in front of them, and they can't see or read the sign that is 100 yards ahead of them, that concerns me.
That’s when I ask, “When you’re in class at school, do you sit upfront or in the back of the room?”
It doesn't surprise me when they say they sit up front.
So Moms and Dads - when you’re in the car with your new driver, ask them what the signs are telling them. If they struggle to answer because they are struggling to see - it might be time to see the eye doctor.
You may even want to consider scheduling an appointment before they start driving. You want to set them up for success as they learn.
Stay alert and stay safe out there!
